The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
